If you’ve been apprehensive about attending a yoga class because you’re afraid you won’t be able to bend into the shape of a pretzel, never fear! Yoga is a gentle, slow-moving exercise that helps to create awareness necessary to be in tune with your body. All that matters is that you do your personal best. If you can’t touch your knees at first, no problem: postures can be modified to accommodate your current level.
Read the article from the link below. Its where I get all my YOGA info. Lots of great articles and stuff. Good luck on your quest for answers.
Peace

Yoga encourages spirtuality...a mind/body connection...Its purpose is to improve mental stability by silencing the mind. It goes hand it hand with the objective of medititation, to promote inner peace.
It also increases flexibility, and build strength...There's so a lot of good background information on Yoga, that you can read here:

hey, well this is the definition of yoga from dictionary.com

any of the methods or disciplines prescribed, esp. a series of postures and breathing exercises practiced to achieve control of the body and mind, tranquillity, etc.

yoga will help your overall health by relaxing your mind and your muscles--say you have back problems, yoga will help stretch out and relax your back. same goes for any other part of your body.

hope i helped!
References :
me and http://www.dictionary.com
